Digital Freight Security

Improving risking systems for the efficiency of cross-border freight transport

  • Enabling trade depends on smooth freight transit between customs territories

Following the UK's exit from the EU, an important physical change is the introduction of customs controls on goods from EU passing through major UK ports, as well as the customs border on the Irish Sea. The UK has established customs clearance sites with capacity to accommodate these controls inland from the major ports. This has increased the potential to create additional journeys and negative economic, environmental, and social impacts.

  • Journey data benefits better risking systems

  • Smooth border transit improves efficiency for authorities, ports, shippers, and carriers

Border crossing obstacles

Our Freight-Secure solution provides a connected security system that links with customs information for unitised freight, to enable customs clearance at any point on the journey from departure to destination; and eliminates additional journeys to inland sites. The solution includes a digital customs seal and mobile device app, with interfaces to customs declaration systems, such as required by UK’s HMRC.

  • Digital customs seal provides additional security

  • Live journey tracking provides additional data

  • Geospatial pattern analysis provides risk identification

  • Automated alerts provide all stakeholders with up-to-date status

The Secure Border-Ready Freight project was fully funded by Department for Transport’s T-TRIG 2020 programme, which supports early-stage research into innovative ideas or concepts that facilitate a better transport system.
